Public Transport in Ludhiana
The super city of Ludhiana can be accessible easily by means of air or rail or by road for the pother major pockets of India. The tourists’ places in India have taken a generous step to mitigate the headache regarding the issue by arranging any types transport for the general public and ensures a comfortable journey not only to Ludhiana but also in and around Ludhiana. The most popular modes of transportations are cars, taxis, auto-rickshaws, bicycle and motorbikes. Those who can afford the journey for themselves basically hire taxis. This is comparatively a costly mode of transportation. Auto rickshaw is another very quick and good mode of transportation in Ludhiana.
Buses:
Effective public transport is the need of every metropolitan city. The concept of public transport is quite old in the city of Ludhiana, but has generally not met with any reasonable success so far. In Ludhiana the concept of city transport started with operation of buses by Punjab Roadways, which were later shifted to the MC in the year 1977 along with G. M. transport, drivers and 36 no of buses with passenger capacity of 52 persons. However, over a period of time these buses were grounded and the services withdrawn. Presently the system is again being run the state transport, which has given the city bus service on contract to the private transporters. As there are more than sufficient three wheelers and cycle rickshaws plying of, busses are again not profitable in the inner city. However these are functioning successfully on long routes at a distance of 20 kms from the bus stand.
Other Available Modes of Public Transport
- Auto Rickshaws: Auto rickshaws are the main lifelines of the city for traffic transport. There are 11000 numbers of registered and equal number is running as unauthorized and have support of the unions. The three-wheelers are not part of public transport. These are used only for private transport. That is the reason, why the three-wheelers get permits from the Transport Department for the entire city. However, these are used for public transport as these are seldom hired for private use. Auto stand operators monitor the plying of these three-wheelers.
- Cycle Rickshaw: There are approximately 14,000 number of cycle rickshaws, which mainly cover 1˝ to 2 km. distance from the main railway station and bus stand and other parts of, congested city. However because of the road infrastructure these go up to distance of 4 km.
- Taxies: Taxies mainly run in the city under emergency circumstances specially they are stationed near the hospitals. However there are other many places were the taxies are parked at the designated taxi stands but these ply to other district of Punjab and other cities. There is still more demand during marriage season.
