Payal - A Town of Ludhiana

PayalPayal is a historic town. It is said to have come into existence about 1200 years back. It was earlier known as Sahibgarh after the name of Maharani Sahib Kaur. This historical town is situated at a distance of 10 Km from Ludhiana, in the south of city Doraha, on main Ambala - Ludhiana Road.

It has an ancient & historical background. This city has faced many sultanates and ruler. About 770 years ago a Muslim Faqir Shah Hussain settled here on a 'Tilla'. Then his followers also came & settled here. When this land was dug out to build houses, then an anklet (payal) was found. So, Faquir Shah Hussain named this place as “Payal”. The grave of Shah Hussain is present here today also. After that during 1580-85, King Akbar ruled this city. During the year 1766, Maharaja Amar Singh of Patiala made this city, a part of the state “Patiala”. Maharaja Amar Singh got built a fort in this city with the co-operation of Mughals in 1771. This fort is present here today also & a Govt. Girls High School is being run in this fort. Besides this fort, there are 17 Hindu temples, five Pir, Gompir, Samadhi of queen, Mazar of Baba Main Maula & about five gurdwaras in this city. There is a very ancient temple of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parwati. There is also a temple named “Dasnam’s Akhara”. Another temple of this type is situated in Uttar-Pradesh. People of all religions live here with great love and affection.

People of almost all religions live in this city. No communal riots of any kind have everPayal happened in the city. This city is politically prominent due to territory of S. Gian Singh Rara (C.M. PEPSU state) and Late Sh. Beant Singh (Ex chief Minister, Punjab). The household village “Kotli” of S.Beant Singh is situated at a distance of 4 km from payal. S.Beant Singh played an important role in extinguishing the deadly terrorism from Punjab. At present, S.Tej Prakash, son of S.Beant Singh is M.L.A of Punjab Legislative assembly.

As far as education is concerned, the city does not have much educational facilities. Besides one Govt. High School for girls, there is one Senior Secondary School for boys and two Primary schools in this city. Other important facilities like Civil Hospital, Veterinary Hospital, Post office, Telephone Exchange and Board of Electricity are available here. Besides these facilities, there is a Police station and sub-Divisional office.
