Ludhiana Personality :: Prof. S.S. Narula
More than 60 years ago, Prof S.S. Narula wrote his first novel “Peo Putter” (Father and Son) which was hailed as the first realistic novel in Punjab literature. It is said about the birth of English novel in the eighteenth century “by the side of the novel of sentiment, realistic novel developed”. The reference had been to Samuel Richardson and Henry Fielding.
Likewise, by the side of the novel of sentiment of Nanak Singh, the father of Punjabi novel, realistic novel of Surinder Singh Narula developed. Thereafter, Prof Narula enriched Punjabi fiction with his 12 Punjabi novels (translated into many languages) and 4 collections of short stories. He had also contributed to literary criticism from time to time. As a poet too, he made his mark during the later years of his life. But much of his poetry is still unpublished.
He was born in 1917 in Amritsar. He was the product of Khalsa College, Amritsar where Teja Singh and Sant Singh Sekhon inspired him to adopt Punjabi language for creative work, despite having been well versed in English language. He had a great regard for his teacher Principal Sant Singh Sekhon whose feet he always touched whenever he came fact to face with him. He had a strong affinity with Prof. Mohan Singh who had published him in his Punjabi monthly “Punj Darya”, Lahore.
Prof. Narula passed his examination for the degree of Master of Arts in English literature in 1942 from Khalsa College Amritsar. He started his teaching career from Govt. Brijindra College, Faridkot in 1948. He retired from Government College, Ludhiana, in 1975 as PES(I) in the grade of Principal.
The news of his death, in the early hours of June 16 2007, has cast a gloom on the literary world. He has left his wife and three daughters, besides an admiring group of his students as well as readers.
