Nehru Planetarium, Ludhiana
Nehru Planetarium located near Rose Garden, initially an asset of Ludhiana is now a blot on the face of Ludhiana tourism. Set up at an expenditure of crores, Nehru planetarium, one of its kinds in the northern region & one of the few in the country, has now been closed down. The planetarium was a prestigious project of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation and was maintained by it.
It was set up in 1987 with an aim to develop a scientific temperament among people, particularly students, by way of displaying various astronomical phenomena and scientific processes. Ironically, it is a picture of total neglect today. Lack of maintenance has ailed the planetarium to such an extent that it lies non-functional today. With a seating capacity of 80, the planetarium has hardly any visitors today. There is nobody at the ticket window and it wears a deserted look. Even as a notice board tells the show timings as 10.14 am and 11.15 am on normal days and at 3.15 pm and 4.15 pm on holidays, no show goes on here. So much so not many people in the mega city are aware that a planetarium exists in Ludhiana, although it is adjacent to the Rose Garden.
