Lakkar Pul, Ludhiana
Lakkar Pul, one of the most prominent landmarks in the city, which has been a witness to the development of the city from a small settlement to a metropolis, has made way for a modern flyover. This historic landmark in the city has fallen victim to the process of urbanization as the railway footbridge, connecting the old city and the Civil Lines locality, is going to be replaced with a flyover to meet the increasing need for better traffic movement and easier vehicular access across the main railway line in the city.
People doing business at the foot of the wooden bridge claim it was built when the railway line below it was laid down, sometime in 1901. People in who came here after the Partition say it existed when they came to settle in Ludhiana. And youngsters of the area say ‘Lakkarwala Pul’ featured in their grandparents’ conversations since the time they can remember. But now the MC has pulled down the entire bridge to pave way for the railway over bridge, set to join Civil Lines with the main flyover near Raikhy Cinema.
But people say pulling down the wooden bridge was totally uncalled for. "The feasibility of this Civil Lines railway over bridge is debatable; even work on it is on hold for now. And the old pedestrian bridge could have stayed even if the over bridge was to come up."
With the bridge has vanished a vital link connecting old Ludhiana to the new. The bridge was a great help for people who do not bring their cars to this area — all you had to do was take an auto rickshaw till Civil Lines, walk over the bridge and, voila, you were in Chaura Bazar. Now people have to commute through the busy Jagraon Bridge or Domoria Bridge to reach the old city.
