Christian Medical College & Hospital

A British When you talk of Ludhiana Medical Landmarks, can the mention of Christian Medical College & Hospital (CMC & H) be far behind? The hospital is almost as synonymous with the Ludhiana as the Ludhiana is with the hospital. After all, CMC has a 113 years old history, making it one of the oldest educational institutions & hospital not only in Punjab, but in the India as well. Today in the present scenario, the institution that has put LudhianaDistrict on the World’s Medical map is alleviating the pains of the city & the Punjab state in a much better way than before.

The story of this glorious institution started with a lady from England, Dr. Edith Brown, who lived her life in Ludhiana and who today is called the founder of CMC. Lovingly known to the natives as Mrs. Brown, she came to Ludhiana in 1891. Here she was appalled by the neglect of women, who were silently suffering from diseases of ignorance, illiteracy and the pardah system & due to this they were deprived of medical treatment. That’s when she decided that if she had to change this she would require a team of trained people to help her in this huge task. A group of women missionaries met in Ludhiana for three days. And the result was a medical school and since Ludhiana was the central place, an empty building was rented and a 30-bed hospital was initiated. On January 4, 1985 the school opened with 4 students, 15 nurses and 2 dispensers.

A major landmark in the history of the school was the inauguration of the Brown Memorial Hospital in March 1957. Today the same CMC & Hospital is a premier institution, which consists of Medical College, Dental College & a College of Nursing. While CMC continues to be involved in community outreach, it has grown leaps & bounds in highly developed specialized services for patients.
