Christian Medical College
A British When you talk of Ludhiana Medical Landmarks, can the mention of Christian Medical College & Hospital (CMC & H) be far behind? The hospital is almost as synonymous with the Ludhiana as the Ludhiana is with the hospital. After all, CMC has a 113 years old history, making it one of the oldest educational institutions & hospital not only in Punjab, but in the India as well. Today in the present scenario, the institution that has put LudhianaDistrict on the World’s Medical map is alleviating the pains of the city & the Punjab state in a much better way than before.
The story of this glorious institution started with a lady from England, Dr. Edith Brown, who lived her life in Ludhiana and who today is called the founder of CMC. Lovingly known to the natives as Mrs. Brown, she came to Ludhiana in 1891. Here she was appalled by the neglect of women, who were silently suffering from diseases of ignorance, illiteracy and the pardah system & due to this they 
were deprived of medical treatment. That’s when she decided that if she had to change this she would require a team of trained people to help her in this huge task. A group of women missionaries met in Ludhiana for three days. And the result was a medical school and since Ludhiana was the central place, an empty building was rented and a 30-bed hospital was initiated. On January 4, 1985 the school opened with 4 students, 15 nurses and 2 dispensers.
A major landmark in the history of the school was the inauguration of the Brown Memorial Hospital in March 1957. Today the same CMC & Hospital is a premier institution, which consists of Medical College, Dental College & a College of Nursing. While CMC continues to be involved in community outreach, it has grown leaps & bounds in highly developed specialized services for patients.
Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana
Today the name of Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMC & H) Ludhiana has become identical with excellence in patient care & medical education where the emphasis is on providing super specialty services. An imposing complex of the hospital buildings, situated at Tagore Nagar, Ludhiana in the midst of beautiful surroundings, presents the look of an admirable monument.
Very few people knew that in 1936, management of the school was handed over to the Arya Samaj, Saban Bazar, Ludhiana, under the aegis of Arya Pratinidhi Sabha, Punjab. A separate Managing Body nominated by the Managing Committee of Arya High School, Ludhiana managed the Medical School. It was shifted to its own building (now, Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, College Campus, Ludhiana) in 1937.
The medical school was recognized for LSMF (Licentiate of the Punjab State Medical Faculty) in 1938 and also for the running hospital attached to it. The following year, the Managing Body decided that the Ludhiana Medical School should, in future, be called “Arya Medical School” and the hospital attached to it “Dayanand Hospital”.
It was only in the year 1964 that, consistent with the policy of the Government, the Arya Medical School flowered into a full-fledged MBBS College, which came to be known as Dayanand Medical College. The management of this college was taken over by a galaxy of prominent people of Ludhiana, who formed an organization known as the “Managing Society of Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana”, a minority institution and Late Shri H.R.Dhanda, a prominent industrialist of the town, became its Founder-President.

Dr. B.L Kapoor Memorial Hospital
It began with a visionary, Dr Beshasher Lal Kapur, a young medical enthusiast from The Medical School of Germany who arrived in Lahore in 1930. He was shocked that India followed the traditional “daai” system for the deliveries and in the process many mothers ran the risk of infections and stood at the edge of losing their babies with related medical problems. This scenario provoked him to think and in the process conceived a vision... of creating an institution that could understand and take care of all the medical needs of a woman before, during and after her pregnancy... to give the joy of motherhood in a healthy and safe way.
Dr Kapur realized this vision by setting up the first maternity hospital in Lahore under the aegis of Lahore Hospital Society. Just when all the services he offered in the hospital began and were being recognized and appreciated by the people of Lahore, India went through the trauma of partition and Dr Kapur shifted to Ludhiana. But the transition of place was no a deterrent to this visionary and he went ahead setting up the Hospital n Ludhiana and called it “The Ludhiana Maternity Hospital.” It is now situated at Old Sabzi Chowk Ludhiana.
Mohan Dai Oswal Cancer Hospital
All hospitals start with a noble cause but only a few like the Mohan Dai Oswal Cancer Hospital stick to their goal of providing the best medical facilities at an reasonable cost. This landmark institution was established in 1984 as a charitable institution to extend comprehensive quality treatment for cancer to the masses at an affordable price. Today the Mohan Dai Oswal Cancer Hospital Ludhiana, whose primary motto is Maximum benefits, to largest number at minimum cost, has been recognized as a centre of excellence.
