Ghumar Mandi, Ludhiana
Ghumar Mandi, once the exclusive domain of potters, which was then located on the outskirts of Ludhiana, has over the years become a fashionable shopping center in the heart of the new city. A couple of potters, however, still manage to eke out a living by selling earthenware.
To begin with, potters had ample open space in the area where they could make and bake their products, which with the passage of time became less and less due to growing population. Now for the past 20 years or so, the potters of Ghumar Mandi are selling earthenware purchased from potters of elsewhere places.
Now most of the potters have gradually opted out of the profession because of the declining profits and the trend among the younger generation to go in for more tidy jobs. It seems that the vanishing tribe of Ghumar Mandi potters has also created a scarcity of sorts among people who want to buy a pot, as they have to pay through their nose to get the one of their choice.
Today Ghumar Mandi offers a middle course where customers of all hues come and shop. They may come on scooters, in cars and even in cycle-rickshaws. Originally a locality of porters, as the name itself conveys, Ghumar Mandi is fast emerging as one of the important marketplaces in Ludhiana. There are several departmental stores offering a wide range of products on a wide price range. College Road and Cemetery Road are two fast growing market places.
Ever since Ghumar Mandi, once a desolate place, came to be reckoned as new commercial centre for the Civil Lines area, it has witnessed remarkable changes. Old haveli-type buildings have made way for palatial shopping plazas and showrooms. Business activity has increased so much that even more modern buildings are still being razed to erect multi-storyed shopping complexes.
