Flea Market, Ludhiana
In the Ludhiana city where designer wear and branded clothes make a fashion statement for the elite, for the poor, it is the flea market which sells second-hand clothes along the wall of the Jagraon bridge. This market is popular with migrant workers and economically weaker sections of society.
They flock here in large numbers, as sweaters, jackets and trousers are available within an affordable range for them. There are more than 100 makeshift shops selling clothes in reasonably good condition at cheap rates. The conditions under which they conduct their business are harsh though. Those who are into the trade for a long period are lucky to get the support of the back of the bridge. Parallel to them, on the other side of the road, sit a large number of sellers selling clothes on the road. Yet some others have their clothes displayed on cots.
