Akal Garh Market Ludhiana
A massive complex of 800 shops, commonly called the Akal Garh Market, is located in the hub of Ludhiana city. The Akal Garh market came into existence way back in 1984, in an attempt to rehabilitate all those Sikhs who had lost their livelihoods during the 1984 riots. Almost two decades down the lane, the market is now a bustling centre of economy with a footfall of around 10,000 people each day. And, with 800 shops and an estimate of at least five people working in each, there are about 4,000 people in this market at all times.
Apart from this, this market houses a charitable hospital in its basement and a branch of Bank of Punjab on its first floor. Eighty per cent of the business transacted here is of clothes; garments while the rest 20 per cent can be divided into electronics, shoes and other items.
This is no exaggeration as the ground floor of the market which houses around 250 shops leave as little as a feet's space for moving around. All these shops, which deal primarily in garments, flow on to the passages and corridors blocking almost all the six entrances to this market.
